About this book
First serialised 1881 · Published as a book 1883 · One of the most translated books in the world
Carlo Lorenzini, writing under the name Collodi after his mother's home town, began the story as a weekly serial in an Italian children's paper in 1881. He first ended it at chapter fifteen, with the wooden puppet hanged from an oak tree, dead. Readers protested, the editor asked him to carry on, and months later he resumed, taking Pinocchio all the way to becoming a real boy. The whole was collected as a book in 1883.
It was the first Italian children's book to win a wide international audience, and has since become one of the most translated books in the world. The puppet whose nose grows when he lies is now recognised almost everywhere, often through retellings far gentler than Collodi's original.
The copy on this shelf is the full original story, translated from Collodi's Italian.
