About this poem
The custom of wishing on the first star of the evening is old, and turns up across many countries. This particular English wording is more recent than it sounds. It was first written down in America, around the middle of the nineteenth century. There is no single author. The idea underneath it is simple and honest: you get one wish, tied to the first star to appear, and you have to mean it.
Save it for dusk, at a window or out in the garden, when the sky has just gone dark enough for one star to show. Let your child choose their star and keep the wish to themselves. It gives a gentle shape to the end of the day, and a reason to look up.
