Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in Manchester in 1849 and moved to the United States as a teenager, so she wrote as both an English and an American author. She is known for The Secret Garden, A Little Princess and Little Lord Fauntleroy. She was a keen gardener herself, and her love of gardens runs right through The Secret Garden.
